Introduction
INEOS ChlorVinyls operates a large fully integrated PVC resin/paste plant at Stenungsund on the west coast of Sweden
Located approximately 50 kms north of Gothenburg, the Stenungsund Site is the petrochemical production centre for Sweden. PVC and caustic soda have been manufactured at this site for more than 40 years and it remains as the only PVC production facility in Sweden.
Employing around 360 people, the Site has an excellent record of health and safety and continually strives to raise its environmental standards; the Site is accredited to the following:
ISO 9001:2000 - Quality Management System
ISO 14001:2004 - Environmental Management System
EMAS - Voluntarily environmental control and revision within EU
ISO 17025 - Accreditation for environmental analyses
SS627750 - Energy Management
Stenungsund Site produces a variety of grades of suspension and paste PVC. The caustic soda produced at the beginning of the process is sold mostly for use in the Swedish pulp and paper industry.

History of Stenungsund Site
1960s -
With Sweden´s largest and most up-to-date oil terminal and excellent road, rail and air connections, Stenungsund was identified as an ideal location for a petrochemical production centre at the beginning of the 1960s. By 1967 Fosfatbolaget, who were already manufacturing PVC at Stockvik in Sweden, started VCM production at the site, and with the addition of chlorine production in 1969 a fully integrated operation was established.
1970s - Fosfatbolaget continued its development at Stenungsund Site, increasing PVC output to around 70ktes per annum and making a number of environmental investments at the site.
1980s -
In 1984 Hydro purchased Fosfatbolaget. The PVC plant at Stockvik was closed and all PVC production was consolidated at Stenungsund Site. Production capacity was further increased and with the investment in a second production line in 1987 output grew to 110ktes per annum.
1990s -
During the 1990s many important improvements were made to the plant, both to increase its production efficiency and reduce its impact on the environment. New goals were set for production and environmental management, and PVC outputs surpassed 170ktes per annum.
2000s - The Site’s productivity continued to grow. Continuous improvements increased operating output to 190ktes per annum and the Site received approvals for future expansion to 260ktes per annum. On the environmental side, Hydro Polymers moved forward with its commitment to sustainability at Stenungsund Site by incorporating the principles of The Natural Step (TNS) into future development.
2007 - INEOS acquires the Hydro Polymers businesses in the UK, Norway and Sweden from Norsk Hydro. The operations at Stenungsund Site become the responsibility of INEOS ChlorVinyls.
