Back to NatureIt's good news for nature as ICI's Runcorn Site has become a haven for wildlife with visible increases in numbers of flora and fauna. This year, monitoring of the site has revealed a 100 per cent hatch rate - up from 98% in 1997 - for all birds nesting on the site which include lapwings, ringed plovers and Canada geese.A recent ecological study of the area around Runcorn Site have yielded encouraging results. The numbers of birds batching and roosting in the lagoon area has increased significantly on previous recordings with a record number of nests being spotted. Dr Ian Taylor, site environmental manager, commented "We are delighted that Runcorn Site provides such a good habitat for wildlife. This is a real testament to our efforts to improve not only our environmental performance but the environment in which we operate." Over the past three years, ICI has invested more than £60 million to improve environmental performance at Runcorn Site, including £50 million in an environmental improvement project, one benefit of which has been the reclamation of Weston Marsh Lagoon from industrial activity. Since 1996 the lagoon has been dried out and is now returning to its natural habitat. For enquiries contact the Press Office: Craig Welsh
