Weekly News Reading Passport - In Association
of ICI Chlor-Chemicals

Pupils Decide to Take the Write
Path !
More than 300 pupils from eight
Halton primary schools have taken delivery of the Weekly News as
part of a pioneering literacy project.
We have joined forces
with ICI Chlor-Chemicals to launch a Reading Passport scheme as
part a Newspapers in Education initiative which aims to introduce
newspapers to children.
It is hoped that the project will encourage the youngsters involved
to read more and take an active interest in local affairs.
This is the first time such a scheme has been introduced to Halton,
but the programme has proved highly successful in improving literacy
in other areas of the country.
Pupils taking part receive a special 'reading passport'. Each one
contains 15 assignments which can only be completed with a copy
of the Weekly News. A variety of reading exercises and homework
tasks will be set throughout the eight-week programme.
Every youngster who completes their passport will receive a signed
certificate from the editor of the Weekly News, Ian Douglas.
