Response to the Environment Agency Press Release

Supplementary facts relating to ICl's Runcorn environmental performance:

ICI Runcorn Site has spent around £60m in the past three years in improving its environmental performance. Work has included the building and commissioning of the Environmental Improvement Plant which is significantly reducing emissions to air and water.

An audit of Runcorn Sites was conducted by the Environment Agency in 1997 and in a recent reported concluded "ICI takes it environmental responsibilities seriously" and "there was a high level of environmental awareness among staff."

Through significant work to reduce environmental emissions at ICl's Runcorn Site in recent years some achievements include:

  • A 90% reduction of authorised mercury into the Weston Canal in the last 10 years.
  • Since 1991 Runcorn site has achieved a 95% reduction in ozone-depleting gases and a further 60% reduction in greenhouse warming effect.
