HALTON IN BLOOM AWARD EVENING

Winners of the annual Chlor-Chemicals'/Halton Borough Council sponsored Halton in Bloom competition received their prizes at a recent presentation evening hosted by ICI at their Chlor-Chemicals headquarters in Runcorn.

The evening commenced with an informal photographic exhibition of the finalists gardens, after which awards were presented to the winners and runners-up by the Mayor of Halton Cllr Bob Gilligan.

Prizes were awarded in five categories; large garden, small garden and for the first time in the competition's six-year history, emerging garden, commercial display and business frontage.

Organiser of the evening, Chlor-Chemicals community relations officer John Sanders said: "This year has seen another successful competition, the 14 finalists are to be congratulated for being chosen from a record entry of over 70 gardens.

"Judging was difficult as the standard of entries was high, so we chose to award a further ten spot prizes to gardens which displayed any outstanding features, for example hanging baskets, pergolas and rockeries."

Halton in Bloom was judged by retired head of Reaseheath agricultural college, Tom Deans, aided by Halton Borough Council's assistant landscape architect, Tom Banks.
