ICI Chlor-Chemicals Sells First 'Clean' Chlorine Plant to IndiaICI's Chlor-Chemicals business has sold its first licence in India for a chlorine manufacturing plant, which uses the company's latest low-pollution, mercury-free membrane technology. The plant has gone into production in Rajpura, in the Punjab region, using Chlor-Chemicals' FM21 technology and associated equipment to make up to approximately 100,000 tonnes of chlorine per year for the food-to-chemicals Shriram Group, one of India's largest privately-owned companies. Chlorine and its derivatives, including caustic soda, are used by the group in the manufacture of food and agricultural products, as well being sold on the chemicals market. As part of the technology licensing agreement, Chlor-Chemical has supplied the Shriram Group with the core equipment for the FM21 process, together with associated know-how, training and commissioning for its new chemicals complex, which employs around 500 people. Adrian Tattersall, business manager for Chlor-Chemicals' Electrochemical Technology Business, commented: "This is a very important breakthrough into a major new market for us. "The plant has excited a tremendous amount of interest in India because it demonstrates that new technology can be used to deliver environmental benefits and safety as well as providing highly cost-efficient production. "Observers in India have been particularly impressed by the ability of the FM21 process to produce chlorine in quantity without any hazardous waste streams." ICI Chlor-Chemicals is one of the world's leading pioneers of the membrane process, which is increasingly replacing older chlorine manufacturing systems that employed potentially harmful mercury. Since 1981, Chlor-Chemicals has licensed its FM21 membrane technology to 45 users in Australasia, Asia, Europe and the Americas. For enquiries contact the Press Office: Craig Welsh
