May 4, 2000 Marathon MenUNDER STARTERS ORDERSAspiring British athletes are being given a helping hand thanks to a Runcorn father-and-son team and Chlor-Chemicals.Charlie Roberts and his son, Phillip, ran the world famous Flora London Marathon this April in aid of The Ron Pickering Memorial Fund. Both regular runners with the Fords Halewood running club, this was their second marathon which they completed in 3hrs 50 mins and 3 hrs 23 mins respectively. Their "Run for Ron" fundraising got off to a good start as Charlies employers, Chlor-Chemicals at Runcorn, sponsored them for £100. The charity was established in memory of Ron Pickering, a National Coach and BBC broadcaster. He stood for the ethics of sport, the aspirations of the young and the belief that sport could enhance their lives in more ways than the physical. Since 1991 over £280,000 has been given out in grants to more than 600 needy young athletes. The London Marathon is the charitys main source of revenue each year and every penny raised is given out the following year as grants to young talented athletes to help them realise their potential.
