Comberbach Primary School - Eureka!

Original article appeared in 'Campaigner' - October 2001

The Weaver Valley Initiative has engaged local children from Comberbach Primary School, who have once again made their mark on Anderton Nature Park. The Eureka Project was conceived by David James, Countryside Ranger at the Anderton Nature Park.

Their task was to design and produce 3 intricately carved benches and 3 stone sculptures based on Andertons's salt mines and industrial past. With the help of Reece Ingram, an Artist from Truro, over a two-week period the children researched and designed these welcome additions to the park. Hopefully this will encourage visitors to sit and observe how nature has reclaimed the site.

The children drew their inspirations from past and present. The undertook their own research at the Lion Salt Works in Northwich and from this produced a series of charcoal drawings that were the templates for the stunning images that Reece carved. These former engine mounting-blocks from the site now reflects the salt era, The industrial era and the site today.

The school is delighted with the project as the children have discovered a great deal about their local history and the river. This is all thanks to the Weaver Valley Initiative who collaborated with INEOS Chlor to fund the project from the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.
