TEACHERS GAIN INSIGHT INTO INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE AT WORK

Teachers from Halton and the surrounding areas have gained an insight into science on an industrial scale thanks to local chemical company INEOS Chlor. The company recently played host to nine teachers from across the Borough that were given a special tour of the Company's manufacturing operations at Runcorn, Cheshire.

The visit forms part of an ongoing scheme that is being facilitated by Halton Borough Council's Business Education Partnership. During the visit the teachers toured INEOS Chlor's chlorine cellrooms, some of the largest in Europe, to see how brine is turned into chlorine through electrolysis, a process that uses the same amount of electricity as a city the size of Liverpool!

Said Andy Page from Halton Borough Council: "This visit is part of an important initiative that forges links between education providers and local businesses. We're delighted that INEOS Chlor are involved in the programme, which gives teachers the opportunity to understand better the importance of science to industry and to use this knowledge to develop exciting ideas of how to apply real life science in the classroom."

Janet Ward, INEOS Chlor community relations manager said: "We are only too pleased to be involved in projects that encourage children and adults to consider the science behind the chemical industry. We've found that children in particular get a better understanding of science when they can see how it works in everyday life."
