INEOS Chlor Working to Protect Ancient Woodland9th August 2004 An area of rare ancient woodland in Runcorn is being protected thanks to local chemical company INEOS Chlor. The company is working in partnership with Halton Borough Council on a five-year management plan, which will co-ordinate conservation work on the wood at Clifton Clough. Roger Burton, who is working on the programme for INEOS Chlor comments: "Our company policy is to ensure that our operations have as little impact upon the environment as possible, this includes working to protect areas of special environmental or ecological importance. We're delighted to be working alongside specialists from Halton Borough Council to ensure that Clifton Clough is preserved for future generations". Paul Oldfield, Nature Conservation Officer with Halton Borough Council comments: "This exciting project will see a number of important conservation activities carried out in the area including the removal of invasive species of trees for the benefit of our native oak trees, opening up bluebell areas and creating important wildlife habitats". Ancient woodlands occupy less than one per cent of the area of Halton and the ancient woodland at Clifton represents a significant proportion (about seven per cent) of this total.INEOS Chlor is also involved in other environmental projects in the Runcorn area through Cheshire Wildlife Trust, and has recently funded conservation work by Friends of Murdishaw Valley, which has included training community volunteers and the building of a pond-dipping platform.
