INEOS CHLOR HELPS HALTON COMPANIES TO GO GREEN

Runcorn based chemical company INEOS Chlor has been recognised for its contribution to the North West by receiving the Mersey Partnership Inward Investment Award. The award was presented to the company for its continued investment in the Region, which will see almost £390 million spent on its key manufacturing operation at Runcorn over the next five years.

Runcorn based chemical manufacturer INEOS Chlor is supporting the environment with a grant to environment charity Groundwork to provide practical environmental and waste management training to businesses in Halton. The charity has received £10,000 from INEOS Chlor as part of the company's Landfill Tax Credit Scheme, which redistributes tax relief to environmental organisations. Additional funding for the training has been provided by Enworks.

Groundwork is targeting the training at local businesses, many of which are unaware of the opportunities to reduce waste and save money through 'going green'. In addition, with rising landfill costs it is becoming essential for businesses to improve their management of waste, which not only helps the environment but also provides financial benefits.

The INEOS Chlor funded Practical Environmental and Waste Management Training Programme is a comprehensive training course. It provides delegates with the skills to implement practical improvements in the workplace, and develop an environmental management system in line with the international quality standard ISO 14001. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental and Waste Management therefore providing delegates with a recognised award on completion of their training.

Paul Swift of Halton based company Hall and Roberts recently attended the course and comments: "I found this course very helpful. As the Technical Manager in a food processing company all of my efforts had previously been directed towards food safety. I was blissfully unaware of a number of important environmental and waste issues. This course was a real eye opener and provided me with the skills to enable my company to implement real business improvements in all aspects of environmental and waste management".

Companies wishing to get further information or to book a place on the next course, which will run between February and March, should contact Alexis Massey at Groundwork on telephone 0870 241 5886. Places are limited, and will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Notes to Editors

The Practical Environmental Waste Management Training Programme is accredited by The Chartered Institute of Environmental and Water Management. A partnership has been established by INEOS Chlor, Enworks and Groundwork to deliver the training to businesses within Halton. The partnership has attracted funding from INEOS Chlor's Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and the Single Regeneration Budget funding through Enworks.

Groundwork was established in 1981 as a vehicle for involving communities in revitalising neglected land on the urban fringe. It has since grown into a federation of nearly 50 local Groundwork Trusts in the UK and an international movement. Groundwork's purpose is to build sustainable communities through joint environmental action. This is achieved by getting residents, businesses and other local organisations involved in practical projects that improve the quality of life, bring about regeneration and lay the foundations for sustainable development.

Enworks is a regional partnership that manages funding from the North West Development Agency for environmental business improvement projects aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of North West businesses through improved environmental performance.
