MANLEY ON THE MAP!

Manley Village School has always been proud of its unique location as the only school on the Sandstone Trail and now it has its own Waymarker.

A generous grant from chemical company INEOS Chlor made possible the collaboration between the children of Manley Village School and the nationally acclaimed sculptor, Stephen Charnock. The Manley Waymarker is recognisably related in form to the Frodsham installed Waymarker, which heralds the start of the Sandstone Trail.

The Manley Marker has a mosaic foundation of flowers and creatures that the children were inspired to sketch whilst walking the Trail. The artist used these sketches as the inspiration for the mosaic tiles and every child in the school worked on their own tile; the spiralling marker in the centre is built partly from local sandstone that once stood as school gateposts.

The project came to fruition through the commitment to the arts of the Weaver Valley Initiative, INEOS Chlor and the school. The Headteacher has said; 'It is important for children to experience the arts and work alongside real artists and crafts people. The creation and installation of this sculpture enabled the children to develop a relationship with Stephen Charnock over a sustained period of time, learn about how he creates sculpture, contribute their own work to the piece and develop an affinity with their heritage.'

The project started in October last year and became part of a whole school extended focus on the history of the Trail and the legend of the 'Green Man'. The grant from INEOS Chlor made it possible to enrich this learning experience, work with a number of artists and make the whole project so much more meaningful and memorable.

The school has placed a seat next to the Waymarker and commissioned new signage explaining its creation; it hopes that the Waymarker will encourage trail walkers to sit a while, admire the view and the mosaics before continuing their journey.
