GREEN MAKEOVER FOR MOON MEADOW SCOUT CENTRE

Farnworth scout and guide centre Moon Meadow has received a green makeover for its garden area thanks to a team effort by volunteers and environmental organisations.

Groups including 12th Widnes Scouts, environmental regeneration initiative The Mersey Forest, St Luke’s Church, inter-faith organisation Operation Eden and practical conservation charity BTCV have worked together to renovate the grounds of the centre, planting trees, creating new footpaths and constructing a new composting area.

“As well as improving the appearance of the grounds, the project has also run courses to train volunteers in skills such as hedgerow planting and footpath construction,” says The Mersey Forest’s Jo Sayers.

The wildflower meadow sown as part of this training programme will see cornfield annuals such as cornflower, poppy and corncockle come through in spring 2008, with other species such as oxeye daisy due to flower the following year.

The project has been funded by Runcorn-based chemical manufacturer INEOS ChlorVinyls through the Landfill Communities Fund, with additional support provided through Operation Eden.

INEOS ChlorVinyls’ Janet Ward said: “It’s great to see so many groups working together to make a difference to such a valuable community resource as Moon Meadow. Volunteers from the area, including local scout groups, have all lent a hand, and it’s a project we are proud to support.”
