A TAXI RIDE WITH A DIFFERENCE

Reducing your carbon footprint on the earth is what sustainable transport initiatives are all about. Groundwork Cheshire is pleased to announce that the improvements to the Public Bridleway Network at Dutton Locks and Pickerings Cut have now been completed. The only way to enjoy this unique part of Vale Royal is to walk, cycle or horse ride into the area, leaving your car behind. Improving access for all visitors to the area is the result of Vale Royal’s Greenway Partnership working towards the delivery of the Weaver Way in Vale Royal. The Weaver Way is an exciting project to create a sustainable route along the Weaver primarily for walkers, but also sections for cyclists and horse riders, as part of the Weaver Vallet.

Dave Cooney from Vale Royal Bike User’s Group commented; ‘We couldn’t have imagined when we submitted the application for funding to Vale Royal Rural Delivery Programme that this area would be opened up for even more families and visitors with disabilities to enjoy this fabulous area of the Weaver Valley. It really is a success story for countryside access’.

Representatives of the many organisations who helped to fund this ambitious £180,000 project recently walked or cycled to the site to celebrate the new surface. In the flavour of sustainable transport there was a Bicycle Taxi on hand to offer alternative transport along the 2 kilometres of route.

The project has been generously funded by Vale Royal Borough Council, Vale Royal Rural Delivery Programme, Cheshire County Council, Mid-Cheshire Bridleway Association, Waste Recycling Group Ltd and local chemical manufacturer INEOS ChlorVinyls through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Janet Ward from INEOS ChlorVinyls comments:
“This is a really exciting project that provides real benefits to local people and encourages new visitors to the area. Not only do the improvements enhance the local area but they do so in such a way that protects our vulnerable environment. We are delighted to support such a diverse and beneficial project.”

Richard Smith from WREN comments:
‘WREN feels privileged to continue to be involved in the improvement of access across Cheshire, to attract more visitors to the countryside and contribute to the rural economy’.
