LOCAL CHEMICAL COMPANY CELBRATES YOUNG STUDENT’S SUCCESS

Runcorn based chemical company INEOS ChlorVinyls is celebrating following the successful completion of this years ‘Year in Industry’ programme, which culminated in one of the students winning a prestigious award.

INEOS ChlorVinyls has been involved in the Year in Industry scheme for a number of years, the scheme is a pre-university year where engineering under graduates gain real hands-on engineering experience within a business environment.

Over the last year INEOS ChlorVinyls has provided a placement for local student Billy Grant. Following the successful completion of his placement and associated project work, Billy recently received the IMechE Trophy and a cash prize from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (North West) at the ‘Year in Industry’ North West Region Awards night. The award was in recognition of the excellent contribution that has Billy has made to the work project, which involved designing and constructing a rig for the testing of chlorine cylinders at the businesses Weston Workshops in Runcorn. The award was presented by IMechE Vice President Mr Andrew Medd.

Billy is now embarking on a 4 year Mechanical Engineering programme at Warwick University and INEOS ChlorVinyls is continuing to support the aspirations of this young individual to achieve his career goal by sponsoring him through his degree. Billy now joins Jason Zdrenka, a chemical engineering student similarly being sponsored by INEOS ChlorVinyls.

Jason, another local youngster completed the Year in Industry programme with INEOS ChlorVinyls starting in 2005 and is studying Chemical Engineering at Manchester University. In addition Jason is currently working at Runcorn Site through INEOS ChlorVinyls’ Summer Vacation scheme to further develop his experience.

A further success story is the ongoing support that INEOS ChorVinyls have provided to Ruth Holding in her progression through education to full time employment. Ruth first became involved with the Company through the Engineering Education Scheme at Helsby High School and then progressed through the Year in Industry and Summer Vacation scheme. Ruth is now working on a full time basis for INEOS ChlorVinyls at Runcorn.

Ruth said: “In my experience, most graduate engineering jobs offer a competitive salary and good holidays, but what makes potential employers stand out are good graduate development opportunities. This was an important consideration for me when I applied for jobs and from my previous experiences at INEOS ChlorVinyls I was aware that they are committed to helping develop the careers of young engineers. On completion of my four year mechanical engineering degree I was lucky enough to be offered a permanent position at INEOS ChlorVinyls and I am now working in the mechanical engineering group gaining valuable experience before a start my role as a development engineer on plant. I am really enjoying my job and appreciate the opportunity INEOS ChlorVinyls has provided me with to advance my career, knowledge and experience.”

Paul Daniels, INEOS ChlorVinyls Site Manager commented: “The students of today are our managers of tomorrow and our commitment to Billy, Jason and Ruth indicates how important it is for a company like ours to support these students through their University education. We recognise that there is a shortage of young people coming into our industry and it is vital that we encourage and nurture students who show a genuine interest and real aptitude for this type of career.”
