NORTHWICH VOLUNTEERS SCOOP TOP GREEN PRIZES Volunteers from Northwich have won a prestigious prize in the Northwest’s top awards for environmental volunteers. INEOS Chlor is proud to have played its part in the group’s success. The winners beat off competition from over 60 entries from all around the region to win a trophy and a cash award of £1,000 which will help pay for new projects. The Friends of Anderton and Marbury (FoAM) won the Group category of the awards. The Group was formed ten years ago and such is the enthusiasm and dedication of its members that they hold two volunteer sessions every week, on Wednesday and Thursday. The volunteers work with Cheshire County Council countryside rangers to help maintain and improve Anderton Nature Park and Marbury Country Park in Northwich. In addition to their work with the rangers they also run their own programme of lively monthly events. If you fancy finding out what culinary delights are to be found growing in Cheshire’s woodlands or if you want to try your hand at bird box making then FoAM have an event for you. INEOS Chlor is delighted with the group’s achievements. Over a period of ten years INEOS Chlor has invested in a range of environmental and community projects at Anderton & Marbury through its Landfill Tax Credit Scheme. Their last project, masterminded & run by FoAM involved improving the habitat for birds at Haydn’s Pool. A team of hardworking volunteers from the group created a shingle beach on the island in Haydn’s pool to encourage more wading birds to nest there. They also cleared dense vegetation so visitors can now get a birds eye view of the pool. Janet Ward of INEOS Chlor says, "We were approached to support this project and after witnessing first hand the enthusiasm and dedication of the Group, we had no hesitation. The Group have made such a difference to the development of this area it is tremendous, we are proud to support them!" Other INEOS Chlor projects include wildflower planting, creation of new pathways & a range of community arts projects including the striking dragonfly entrance gates at Anderton & Butterfinch bridge on Marbury Lane.
