INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE UNEARTHED IN RUNCORN

A reconstruction of a section of the original quarry tracks have been put in as an art feature on Runcorn Hill, using tracks unearthed on the local nature neserve itself.

These 'drumlines' have been put back on display thanks to the support of Halton Borough Council and funding from local chemical manufacturer INEOS ChlorVinyls.

Runcorn Hill was once the largest and busiest quarry in Cheshire. Sandstone was transported in wagons on rail tracks from the quarry to Weston docks.

Sandstone was even shipped as far as America to be used in the construction of New York harbour.

Project funding has allowed the Friends of Runcorn Hill to commission the manufacture of a replica quarry wagon known as a bogie and to reinstate the original tracks.

Visitors walking through the woodlands and heathlands at Runcorn Hill can now get an insight into the site’s industrial past.

Halton Borough Council's Executive Board Member for Parks and Countryside Cllr Phil Harris, said: "The project was initiated by the Friends of Runcorn Hill and supported by Halton Borough Council, Action Weaver Valley and INEOS ChlorVinyls."

The finishing touches included some heathland planting organised by a Parks and Countryside Ranger for Halton Borough Council.

She was helped by volunteers from the Friends of Runcorn Hill and 306 Squadron Air Cadets.

Janet Ward, representative of INEOS ChlorVinyls comments, “This project is unique and provides visitors to Runcorn Hill with an insight into the heritage of the area.

"INEOS ChlorVinyls is proud to be associated with this project as it promotes the importance of this area to visitors.”

Action Weaver Valley is a working partnership of public, private and voluntary sector organisations, between Winsford flashes and the river’s confluence with the Mersey.
