NEW SCULPTURE COMMISSIONED FOR NORTHWICH WOODLANDS
Action Weaver Valley and Cheshire West & Chester Council have completed a new sculpture project with artist Roger Day thanks to
funding provided by local chemical manufacturer INEOS.
INEOS have funded numerous environmental art projects in Northwich Woodlands. For this project Roger has worked with community
groups to design some stunning new seating. He has created the benches from two trees felled in the woodland – an oak and a chestnut.
The work was done on site so lots of visitors have been able to follow the progress of the project and even have a go themselves under
Roger’s expert supervision.
Janet Ward from INEOS comments; “We are delighted to contribute to such a deserving project, which will be widely used and appreciated
by the local community. This is one of a number of projects that we have supported in Northwich Woodlands over the years and the project
was yet another example of artists, rangers, communities and local businesses working together, which is truly wonderful!”
One key element of the design was to ensure that the seats are suitable for use by disabled visitors. Northwich Woodlands has over three
miles of easy access paths, disabled parking & toilets. Peter Schofield, countryside ranger adds; “This project aimed to improve access by
providing stop off points along Marbury Lane. We sought very practical advice from the local walking group and from visitors with a range of
disabilities. Their input has been crucial to the success of the project.”
Roger Day has very skilfully incorporated the practical tips into 2 distinct designs, which are influenced by the natural environment and the
industrial past of the area.
Visitors will be able to take a break and appreciate the beauty of the woodlands in comfort and style.
